Cat Tested

Cat approved.

I just had it sitting on the desk there, waiting for a time when I could add a few rows, and black cat took advantage of the situation and made herself right at home, it appears.

So I’ve had this other side project going on basically ever since I taught myself how to crochet. I’m making a ton of hexagons, and I want to tessellate them into another throw or blanket or something. I’m not sure what yet, but I don’t have enough yarn. This yarn does need to all be the same weight, because each hexagon has to fit perfectly with the next one. I laid some of them out and took a picture. It’ll end up looking something like this:

But I think the red is kind of photobombing everything. I have two shades of green, two shades of blue, cream, and then the few red hexagons. I like the pizzazz (for lack of a better word) that they add, because about 95% of the stuff I own is blue, green and/or white. But I’m just not sure about that red... I definitely don’t have enough of the right yarn to take this project very far now – I’m mostly just working with scraps of Wal-Mart yarn. But mom will probably be sending a birthday box in a few months and I can make requests. Any suggestions for colors that would balance this out??

Also, I’m not really sure how to attach all these hexagons to each other nicely. Have you ever done anything like that? Thoughts??

  1. Oops, I had thought I responded... maybe I did and it didn't take?

I'll have to take pictures of my Granny-Square blanket, where I attached all the squares with a single crochet stitch. There's a million and one different ways to attach squares/hexagons/whatever... I've even seen simple slip stitches that looked good, I just picked one and tried it. Definitely gave a textured look to the back!

    1. You made a granny square one?! PICTURES!!! : )

I basically gave up on the stripes blanket. For now at least. I made it like 15 rows in, but it started angling oddly on both ends. I tried to correct it as I went by adding or dropping stitches and loosening and tightening tension, but that stupid blanket just continued on its course. And I happened to find a picture on pinterest of a blanket that was really beautiful and made of squares. It was linked to a flickr photo, so no pattern. I figured most of it out just from the picture, but then found out that it's called a wagon wheel and found an actual pattern that I adapted somewhat. So I ripped out all the stripes blanket and started making squares. I have two so far... Haha...

    2. Haha. I used the granny square pattern below.... I'll get pictures taken tonight hopefully!! I found the squares to be so much easier - but you do have to watch the tension otherwise some squares will be bigger/smaller than others!! Thankfully this is an easy problem to hide in the piecing together as you can mix the smaller ones in pretty well.

  2. Maybe just the placement of the red is photobombing it all? I could see them being pretty accents in the corners or randomly throughout the blanket.... I love blue, teal, white, ect. color schemes, so I'm sure more shades of those colors would be great. I could see a brown helping incorporate the reds especially if it was a warmer brown (with red tones? ha.).
